LEARN FINNISH CONSONANTS LESSON

CONSONANTS

The pronunciation of Finnish consonants is rather lax compared to English. This is particularly true of the so-called stops p, t, and k, which are always unaspirated, as in French. This means that the slight puff of breath that follows the English sound is lacking in Finnish. A practical way of checking your pronunciation is to keep your hand in front of your mouth when pronouncing p, t, k: the less breath you feel on your hand, the better the stop sound is.
